Upgraded technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted the EEXI regulation (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing ships. By 2023, all existing cargo and cruise ships over 400 gross tonnage will be forced to follow these regulations. The EEXI is calculated by comparing a ship's energy efficiency to a baseline, which is determined based on its design and size. To initiate the collection of data for reporting of ships annual operational the CCI (carbon intensity indicator) will also be mandatory for all ships starting in January 2023.
Regulations to reduce the GHG emission
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations, a global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. The strategy on reducing GHG (green house gas) emissions from ships has been adopted by governments to improve energy efficiency in the short-term to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
Carbon intensity indicators (CCIs) enable shipping companies to identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency and reducing their carbon footprint. Examples of this can be utilizing more efficient engines, optimizing ship routes and speeds, and investing in alternative fuels or energy sources.
