Hyundai Welding improves marine control systems with Beijer Electronics

Hyundai Welding has developed a new generation of ballast water treatment control systems in collaboration with Beijer Electronics. The solution simplifies system architecture, reduces costs, and enhances reliability, bringing measurable benefits to shipyards and marine operations.

Hyundai Welding’s challenge

Hyundai Welding, a leading provider of welding technologies and marine equipment, set out to modernize its ballast water treatment systems to meet growing demands for efficiency, compact design, and remote service capabilities. The company needed a control solution that could reduce hardware complexity and cost, while maintaining high performance and reliability in demanding shipbuilding environments.

A key requirement was to eliminate the need for a separate PLC CPU, which would reduce installation space and simplify system maintenance. Additionally, Hyundai Welding wanted to improve system visibility and enable remote monitoring to minimize downtime and improve service responsiveness.

A streamlined solution with Beijer Electronics

In April 2025, Hyundai Welding and Beijer Electronics completed the development of a next-generation ballast water treatment control system built around Beijer’s X2 control HMI solution. This integrated HMI solution combines CODESYS control and smart visualization in a single unit, removing the need for a separate PLC and significantly reducing hardware complexity.

The system uses remote I/O modules to manage all control functions, making it ideal for applications with relatively few I/O points and straightforward control logic. Hyundai Welding now supplies over 200 units annually to shipyards, all powered by this compact and efficient architecture.

The result is a system that is easier to install, more cost-effective to maintain, and more reliable in operation. The built-in VPN Cloud technology also enables secure remote access, allowing Hyundai Welding to provide fast support and reduce downtime for its customers.

Benefits for shipyards and marine customers

Hyundai Welding’s customers benefit directly from the improved system design. The simplified architecture reduces installation time and space requirements, while the integrated HMI enhances operational transparency. Remote connectivity allows for faster diagnostics and troubleshooting, improving service response and minimizing disruptions.

Key customer benefits include:

  • Lower equipment and maintenance costs
  • Improved system uptime and reliability
  • Easier installation and reduced footprint
  • Real-time monitoring and remote support capabilities

These improvements help shipyards operate more efficiently and meet regulatory requirements with greater confidence.

Why Beijer Electronics was chosen

Hyundai Welding chose Beijer Electronics for several reasons. The company valued the strong engineering support provided throughout the development process, which helped ensure successful system integration. The proven reliability and simplicity of the X2 control HMI platform were also key factors.
Beijer Electronics delivered tailored features based on Hyundai Welding’s specific needs, helping to build trust and strengthen the partnership. The ability to offer a compact solution without a separate PLC was a major advantage, reducing both cost and complexity while improving maintainability.

Looking ahead

Hyundai Welding is preparing to implement a VPN-based remote support system to further enhance monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities across multiple sites. The company continues to involve Beijer Electronics early in the development of new systems, ensuring alignment in architecture, performance, and integration.

This collaboration reflects a shared focus on practical innovation and customer value. Together, Hyundai Welding and Beijer Electronics are helping drive progress in marine machinery with efficient, connected control solutions.

The challenge:

Hyundai Welding needed a compact, cost-effective control system for ballast water treatment—eliminating separate PLCs, enabling remote monitoring, and ensuring high reliability in marine environments.
